Initial Flood Watch for Huon River Basin

Issued at 4:47 pm EST on Sunday 15 April 2018

By the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart.

Flood Watch Number: 1

A series of cold fronts continue to cross Tasmania bringing rainfall to the Huon River catchment.

The upper Huon catchment is wet. In the 24 hours to 9 am Sunday, widespread rainfall totals of 15-35 mm have been recorded, with up to 43 mm at Warra. Snow has also accumulated at higher elevations.

Additional widespread rainfall totals of 15 to 25 mm are expected overnight Sunday and during Monday, with isolated totals up to 30 mm possible in elevated areas. Most of this rain is associated with a warmer front expected to cross the State in the early hours of Monday morning.

River rises are occurring in the Huon River in response to the rain over the weekend. Further rises are expected during Monday and snow melt may enhance runoff.

Catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard throughout the Huon River catchment during the next few days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:
Huon River
