Winds strengthening overnight

Northerly winds are expected to increase ahead of a cold front that will cross the State Friday.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 to 100 km/h are expected to develop overnight and during Friday, affecting mainly elevated areas of the State. Winds over Alpine areas (above 1200 metres) are expected to average 70 to 90 km/h Friday morning with gusts up to 120 km/h.

Winds are expected to ease during Friday following the passage of the front, although local thunderstorms may still produce some strong wind squalls.

Locations which may be affected include Stawell, Ararat, Kyneton, Ballarat, Daylesford and Falls Creek.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
