For people in parts of Kimberley district.
Issued at 2:54 pm Friday, 18 April 2025.
Heavy rainfall and damaging winds to persist despite Tropical
Cyclone Errol weakening today.
Weather Situation: Ex-Tropical Cyclone Errol has now weakened
below tropical cyclone strength and has made landfall just south of
Kuri Bay this afternoon. While no longer considered a tropical
cyclone, damaging wind gusts may still persist near the low centre
along the Kimberley coast and continue to deliver moderate to heavy
rainfall as the system tracks inland.
Moderate to HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is
forecast for parts of the Kimberley coast for the remainder of
Friday, speading inland this evening and into Saturday morning.
Six-hourly rainfall totals of 50 to 80 mm are likely, with isolated
falls in thunderstorms excess of 100 mm possible, increasing to 140
mm near the coast.
Rainfall is expected to ease below warning thresholds near the
coast later on Friday, easing throughout by later on Saturday
morning.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of 90 km/h remain possible near the coast
between Kuri Bay and Cockatoo Island for the remainder of the
afternoon as ex-Tropical Cyclone Errol moves inland.
Locations which may be affected include Kuri Bay and Mount
Barnett.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people
should:
* If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm
water drains and streams.
* Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from
windows.
* Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones
if there is lightning.
* If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
* Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power
lines and loose debris.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and
waterways.
* Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
* Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should
always be treated as live.
* Assess your home, car and property for damage.
* If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance
company to organise permanent repairs.
* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly
damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
