Damaging wind gusts are possible around a cold front moving over
the South West and Lower West this evening.
Weather Situation: A fast moving cold front is expected to affect
the south west of the state this evening, bringing a short period
of gusty showers and moderate rainfall. Isolated thunderstorms are
also possible in the far southwest. The front is expected to reach
the Southwest Capes around sunset and move quickly along the west
coast, reaching Perth by mid-evening then weakening as it extends
further north and over inland areas before midnight.
Strong west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS up to 100 km/h are possible for a brief period
around the cold front as it moves along the west coast and adjacent
inland areas during the evening.
Winds are likely to ease quickly once the leading edge of the cold
front has passed.
This is typical weather for this time of year.
Locations which may be affected include Bunbury, Busselton,
Mandurah, Margaret River, Perth, Augusta, Dunsborough, Rottnest
Island and Windy Harbour.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people
should:
* If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm
water drains and streams.
* Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from
windows.
* Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones
if there is lightning.
* If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
* Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power
lines and loose debris.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and
waterways.
* Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
* Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should
always be treated as live.
* Assess your home, car and property for damage.
* If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance
company to organise permanent repairs.
* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly
damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
