For people in parts of Kimberley district.
Issued at 10:37 am Friday, 18 April 2025.
Heavy rainfall risk to persist despite Tropical Cyclone Errol
weakening today.
Weather Situation: Tropical Cyclone Errol is expected to make
landfall near Kuri Bay this afternoon, then weaken below Tropical
Cyclone strength soon after. While winds are expected to weaken
below damaging thresholds, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected
to continue over the Kimberley for the remainder of Friday and into
Saturday morning as the system moves inland.
Moderate to HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is
forecast for parts of the Kimberley west of Fitzroy Crossing from
early Saturday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals of 50 to 80 mm
are expected, with isolated falls in excess of 100 mm possible near
the low centre.
Rainfall is expected to ease below warning thresholds by Saturday
morning.
A separate Tropical Cyclone Advice is current for coastal parts of
the Kimberley between Kuri Bay and Broome. See
http://www.bom.gov.au/cyclone/index.shtml for more
information.
Once the system is no longer being analysed as a Tropical Cyclone
and the associated Tropical Cyclone Warning is cancelled, this
Severe Weather Warning may be extended further west to cover the
ongoing risk of heavy rainfall over coastal parts of the
Kimberley.
Locations which may be affected include Mount Barnett.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people
should:
* If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm
water drains and streams.
* Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from
windows.
* Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones
if there is lightning.
* If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
* Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power
lines and loose debris.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and
waterways.
* Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
* Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should
always be treated as live.
* Assess your home, car and property for damage.
* If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance
company to organise permanent repairs.
* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly
damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
