Flood Watch Number: 9
MINOR TO MAJOR FLOODING IS CURRENT ACROSS MULTIPLE CATCHMENTS IN
THE NORTH TROPICAL AND CENTRAL COAST
FURTHER MINOR FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE BURDEKIN,
PROSERPINE, GULF AND THOMSON RIVER CATCHMENTS OVER THE NEXT FEW
DAYS
The monsoon trough extends across Far North Queensland with
embedded tropical lows near the Gulf and northeast tropical coasts
enhancing rainfall in their vicinity. The trough and associated
lows will remain slow moving for several days. A ridge will persist
over the east coast south of the trough for a few days, weakening a
little from the middle of the week.
Catchments across the North Tropical Coast and Central Coast areas
are very wet due to recent heavy rainfall and will respond quickly
to further rainfall. Gulf and Thomson River catchments are dry to
moderately wet in some areas.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of the Flood
Watch area for at least the next couple of days.
River level rises are occurring and flooding is possible across
the Flood Watch area. Elevated tides are also occurring which may
enhance flooding in coastal parts of the Flood Watch area.
Further isolation of communities and disruption to transport
routes is possible over the next few days.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Upper Flinders River
Lower Flinders River
Cloncurry River
Norman River
Gilbert River
Belyando and Suttor Rivers to Burdekin Falls Dam
Cape River to Burdekin Falls Dam
Thomson River
Flood warnings are current for the following catchments: Mulgrave
and Russell Rivers, Tully and Murray Rivers, Herbert River, Ross,
Bohle and Black Rivers and Bluewater Creek, Haughton River, Don and
Proserpine Rivers, Connors and Isaac Rivers, and Upper and Lower
Burdekin River.
